Section 504 - Disability Accommodations
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Ridgeview College Preparatory High School does not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities.
What is Section 504?
Section 504 ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to an education. A student may qualify for a Section 504 Plan if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, including learning.
Students who qualify receive accommodations and modifications to help them access the same educational opportunities as their peers. Examples include:
- Extended time on tests and assignments
- Preferential seating arrangements
- Assistive technology and accessibility tools
- Modifications to classroom materials and assignments
- Health-related accommodations (medication administration, breaks, etc.)
How to Request a Section 504 Evaluation
Parents, guardians, teachers, or other school staff may request a Section 504 evaluation if they believe a student has a disability that requires accommodations. To request an evaluation:
- Submit a written request to the school's Section 504 Coordinator
- The school will review the request and determine if an evaluation is warranted
- If approved, the school will gather relevant information and conduct an evaluation
- A 504 Team meeting will be held to review findings and determine eligibility
- If eligible, a Section 504 Plan will be developed with appropriate accommodations
Student Rights
- Equal access to education and activities
- Appropriate accommodations and services
- Periodic review and reevaluation
